A Page for Floyd L. RED Mercy - Our Dad

SOMEWHERE IN THE PACIFIC - okay Hawaii, but you have to start somewhere

Born 2 July 1916, in Mosheim, Greene County, Tennessee in the foothills of the great Smoky Mountains. He is part of that generation that saw the most difficult and best of our history. This page is dedicated to his service.

He was a member of Company "I", 32nd Infantry Regiment, 7th Infantry Division. Basic training at Fort Ord (where two of his stepsons also trained in later years), including some exciting months driving a half track near Desert Center, California (under the command of General Patton). Little did he later realize he would be living his later years in the desert with a view of the 29 Palms Marine Base. After this desert training, his unit was first sent to enjoin in the Battle of Attu (complete with summer gear). He would retire for the evenings with his canteen as a pillow and in the morning, it would contain a block of ice.

PFC Floyd L. Mercy
After Alaska, it was finally onto warmer climates with the first stop in Hawaii. Dad participated in the Marshall Islands (Kwajalein) campaign and the Philippines. He was wounded twice. First from hostile fire. From this he recovered. However, the second injury from friendly fire (an American tanker cleaning the bushes which happened to contain Dad and some others), put an end to his combat service. The remainder of his service would be recovering from these wounds to his leg. He was discharged on 22 June 1945.

The son of Fred Lincoln Mercy (an space alien who suddenly appeared in Greene County, Tennessee) and Alta C. Travis (of the Catawba County, North Carolina Traffenstedt and Tennessee Wampler familes), two other brothers also served, S/Sgt Bryson Mercy and LT Lynn Mercy. The youngest of seven children, Floyd is now the sole living child.

It seemed he would be a life long bachelor. But in 1963, he meet our mother, then with five children of her own - obviously slightly nuts, he married her and overnight from a quiet home to instant zoo.

From a early family picture - can't tell but red hair and blue eyes
